Malayalam Movie industry had its beginning in 1928 with the film named ‘VigathaKumaran ’ directed and produced by J.C Daniel. He was a dentist by profession, but directing VigathaKumaran, a film with a Social theme was his initial experience. The film was economically a failure which restricted him from producing more films. ‘Marthandavarma’ was the second film in Malayalam, which was partially a success, but certain legal fights ruined the film and restricted from further exhibitions.
Films ‘Vigathakumaran’ and ‘Marthandavarma’ has no sound tracks attached to it. Later on, film named ‘Balan’ was produced by a Tamil named T.T Sundar in 1938 and it was directed by Notani.
